Faros da Ría · Nerga, Cangas, Galicia

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about staying at Faros da Ría — and about visiting Nerga, Cangas, the Cíes Islands, and the Rías Baixas.

Playa de Nerga

What is Playa de Nerga like? +

Playa de Nerga is a 700-metre stretch of fine white sand in the protected Espacio Natural Cabo Home, part of the Red Natura 2000 coastal zone. The water is calm and sheltered — ideal for families and swimmers.

It holds a Blue Flag certification, with lifeguards in summer, showers, toilets, and a chiringuito at the entrance. On clear days, the Cíes Islands sit directly on the horizon in front of you.

Is Playa de Nerga good for families with children? +

Yes — one of the best family beaches in Galicia. The water is calm and shallow, the beach is smoke-free, and it has lifeguard cover during summer.

There is paid parking at the entrance (around €4 per day), beach showers, accessible facilities, and a café-bar for snacks. The surrounding dune and pine forest is excellent for walks with children.

How far is Playa de Nerga from the apartments? +

3 minutes by car or a 15-minute walk through the dunes and pine forest. The walk follows the Red Natura 2000 coastal path — part of the experience, not just a route to the beach.

Are there other beaches near Nerga and Cangas? +

Cangas do Morrazo has 38 beaches — one of the highest concentrations of Blue Flag beaches in Spain:

  • Playa de Viñó — right next to Nerga, separated by a small rocky outcrop
  • Playa de Barra — 750 m nudist beach within a protected dune system
  • Playa de Melide — exceptionally calm, crystal-clear water
  • Playa de Rodeira — closer to Cangas town centre

All accessible within 10–20 minutes by car from Nerga.

The Cíes Islands

Can I visit the Cíes Islands from Cangas? +

Yes — Cangas is one of the official departure ports for seasonal ferries to the Cíes Islands, running roughly from Easter through September. The crossing from Cangas is shorter than from Vigo.

Visiting the Cíes requires a free prior authorisation from the Xunta de Galicia, as daily visitor numbers are capped at around 2,200 people. Apply first, then book your ferry with an authorised company such as Mar de Ons.

How do I get a permit to visit the Cíes Islands? +

The permit is free and must be requested through the official Xunta de Galicia website. You can apply up to 90 days in advance, for up to 10 people per request.

Once you receive the permit code, you have a two-hour window to buy your ferry ticket — after that, the authorisation is cancelled. In July and August the quota fills fast, so apply as soon as you know your dates. No permit is required outside the restricted period (mid-September to mid-May).

How much does the ferry to the Cíes Islands cost? +
  • Adults — approx. €24–26.50 return from Vigo
  • Children (5–12) — approx. €12
  • Children under 5 — free

The main authorised ferry company is Mar de Ons (+34 986 225 272 · mardeons.es). Services from Cangas are seasonal — confirm schedules in advance.

What can I do on the Cíes Islands? +

The Cíes Islands are part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, with four marked hiking trails leading to viewpoints, lighthouses, and dramatic Atlantic cliffs.

Rodas Beach — the sandbar connecting two of the islands — was named the best beach in the world by The Guardian. The islands are also a certified Starlight destination for stargazing, with seafood restaurants and a campsite for overnight stays.

Cangas & the Rías Baixas

What is there to do in Cangas do Morrazo beyond the beach? +
  • Cangas fish market — daily at the port, selling the night's catch from local boats
  • Old quarter (Outeiro) — cobbled streets, traditional fishermen's houses, the Renaissance Ex-Collegiate Church of Santiago
  • Costa da Vela — Galicia's finest coastal hiking from Nerga to Punta Couso; the Cabo Home lighthouse sits just 2.5 km from the Cíes Islands
  • Aldán village — a fishing harbour with its own small estuary and quiet coves
  • O Facho de Donón — an ancient Celtic and Roman archaeological site with sweeping peninsula views
How do I get from Vigo to Cangas? +

The best way is by ferry. Boats depart from Vigo's Estación Marítima every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends. The crossing takes 20 minutes and arrives directly at Cangas Port in the town centre.

From Cangas Port, Nerga and Faros da Ría are about 10 minutes by taxi or car. By road via the AP-9 and the Rande Bridge, it is approximately 25–30 minutes from central Vigo.

What is the best time of year to visit Cangas and Nerga? +
  • July & August — peak season; warm sea, long days, maximum Cíes ferry frequency
  • June & September — excellent weather, far fewer visitors, easier Cíes access
  • May — ideal for hiking; green landscapes and mild temperatures
  • October–April — dramatic coastal scenery, empty beaches, best seafood season, authentic local atmosphere

The apartments at Faros da Ría are open year-round.

Is Cangas do Morrazo worth visiting outside of summer? +

Absolutely — many local travellers prefer the shoulder and off-season months. The beaches are quiet, the Cabo Home coastal path is at its most atmospheric in autumn and winter, and the restaurants along Cangas waterfront are easier to get into.

The ferry from Vigo to Cangas runs year-round, and Playa de Nerga is beautiful even in January when the light is low and the Cíes Islands emerge from the mist.

What local food should I try in Galicia? +
  • Pulpo á feira — octopus with olive oil, paprika, and coarse salt on a wooden board
  • Percebes — goose barnacles, a Galician delicacy from the rocky Atlantic coast
  • Navajas — razor clams, best eaten simply grilled
  • Empanada gallega — traditional Galician filled pastry
  • Albariño — the local white wine of the Rías Baixas, perfect with seafood

Your welcome basket at Faros da Ría includes a curated selection of Galician products — a first taste of the region before you've even been to the market.
